The Grade 8 Storm :
A Parents Guide

Understanding it. Navigating it. Knowing your teen better.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • Your child used to tell you everything - now you get a shrug and a slammed door.

  • You don't know whether to step in or step back, and the fear of getting it wrong is paralysing.

  • You're watching friendship dynamics shift in ways you don't fully understand and can't control.

  • You're already hearing about parties, vaping, and social media pressure - and they're only 13.

  • Their moods, their reactions, their needs - nothing feels predictable anymore.

  • You're terrified of saying the wrong thing and pushing them further away.

What is The Grade 8 Storm: A Parents Guide?

Because "they'll be fine" isn't enough of a plan.

Grade 8 is, in the words of educational psychologist Cathryne Baird, a perfect developmental storm. Your child moves from being the oldest in primary school to the youngest in high school. Friendships reshuffle. Academic pressure escalates. Puberty is either underway or knocking at the door. And belonging, at 13 - can feel like survival.

This is a 3-session live online course created specifically for parents of Grade 8 learners, developed in collaboration with Cathryne Baird, a registered Educational Psychologist who spends her days working with teenagers, their parents, and schools. She knows exactly what is happening in your child's world - because she hears it first-hand, every single day.

This is not generic parenting advice. This is specific, evidence-informed insight that will help you understand the Grade 8 experience from the inside out - and give you real, practical tools to navigate it with confidence rather than fear.

Your Expert Guide - Cathryn Baird

Cathryne is a registered Educational Psychologist with a special interest in adolescents and teenagers. She works closely with teens, their parents, and schools - because she knows that teenagers don't grow in isolation.

Grade 8 is one of her favourite developmental stages to work with: not because it's easy (it absolutely is not), but because it is complex, layered, and full of possibilities. She will bring the insight from her therapy room directly to you.

What Cathryne hears in her therapy room every week...

From the Grade 8s:
"They don't get how hard it is."
"I don't want to be weird."
"I can't tell my parents - they'll make it a big thing."
"If I don't go, I'll be left out."

From the Parents:
"She used to tell me everything."
"I don't know how much to step in."
"I'm scared about the drinking culture starting so early."
"I don't want to overreact - but I can't under-react either."

This is where the disconnect begins. This course is designed to bridge it - so you understand what's really happening, and they feel understood, not interrogated.

  • You're second-guessing every parenting decision and wish someone would just tell you what actually works.

  • You want to stay connected to your teen - but feel like every conversation either ends in a fight or a wall of silence.

  • You're worried about the social pressures, screen time, early exposure to risk behaviour, and you want practical tools, not platitudes.

  • You want to parent this stage with knowledge and confidence instead of fear and reactivity.

  • You want to understand your child - not just manage them.

Grade 8 is a storm.
But you don't have to weather it alone.

When you understand what is happening underneath the behaviour, you stop reacting out of fear and start parenting with steadiness.
